The reality of planning right now:
The 'During Nap' Planning Time Myth:
Perhaps you are expected to do your planning during nap time.
Sounds great in theory, right?
But let's face it: not ALL your children actually nap at nap time. So you find yourself torn between understanding that not all children sleep yet frustrated because you don't know when - or if -you'll get your planning done if not now.
The 'Built-In' Planning Time Myth:
Or perhaps you are expected to plan during those first and last 15 minutes of your shift. But you and I both know :
- The first 15 minutes of the day is oftentimes spent either setting up your classroom, taking a call from a parent or being stopped in the parking lot or hallway by an early child arrival.
- The last 15 minutes of your day are spent cleaning up, gathering supplies for tomorrow or hanging out with a child whose parent is running late.
So much for 'built-in' planning time.
In either scenario, the time is just not there to work on planning. Looks like you'll need to plan your theme at home this week, on your personal time - AGAIN.
Does this sound familiar...
It's Sunday night, you're online planning your preschool themes for the next week or two.
Each website you go to has promises of many activities for the themes you are planning.
You see one that promises 25+ preschool activities for the theme you are working on.
Yet, when you go to that website, you find 4 or 5 themed activities and then a list of 20 to 30 clickable links that lead you 20 to 30 other websites to find a few more activities.
The next thing you know, HOURS have passed and you:
- still don't have one week's theme fully planned.
- are frustrated because you gave up plans to hang with friends and family tonight (YET AGAIN) to plan for the week but still haven't completed it.
- feel like a volunteer rather than a paid preschool teacher
In addition, your family and friends feel ignored every weekend during the school year because they know "Sunday is planning day".
All of this can cause the burn-out of amazing teachers just like you. I don't want that to happen to you!
You are in this field to make a difference to the children in your care. You love interacting with the children and providing activities that help each of them grow and develop.
Yet the planning expectations are more than you anticipated. I've seen amazingly gifted teachers put in hours of personal time to create their themes each week and have seen many of them burn out. I don't want that to happen to you.
